Set during the medieval age at time where the world is in the grip of plague and starvation. Elena (Barbara Bouchet) is the Mother Superior of a large convent who is caught in the grip of a moral torment. Still morning the death of her love, the bandit Giulio, and she resists any and all men - including the Archbishop who is mad with desire for Elena. The Bishop compels Elena to forget this man and introduces the pain of torture to assist her. Eventually Elena’s desire for love overpowers her will and she accepts his love. Elena soon discovers that she is pregnant with the Archbishops child, causing a deadly situation for him. The local Cardinal learns of this sinful spawn and seeks the identity of the father.
