It is a violent film, full of kinetic, disturbing images of death and dying -- decapitations and brutal swordplay abound. Many interpreted the violence as an effort by the director to strike back at the public, especially the American public, for the horrible death of his wife, Sharon Tate, and others in the Manson slaughters. Whether that assessment has any validity or not is irrelevant to the fact that this version of MacBeth is actually thrilling to watch. The decision to go with young attractive actors in the roles of MacBeth and Lady MacBeth was a good one. Jon Finch is properly ambitious and brutish as the traitorous Lord. Francesca Annis is a lovely Lady MacBeth especially in the moments when her guilt makes her become distracted. A lot was made of the fact that Hugh Hefner and "Playboy" magazine produced the film. That too doesn't matter. The gore and noise and minor eroticism of the film does nothing to denigrate the play and is obviously closer to the reality of a violent, semi-barbaric epoch in history...».
