Plot Summary, Synopsis, Review: IMDb - allmovie.com - demonoid.com - citadelle.org - en.wikipedia.org - movies.nytimes.com - movietome.com - lonchaney.org: «Francois Villon, vagabond, poet and philosopher, is on the road to Paris with his friend Collin when they see an elderly couple being evicted from their home. The two men turn over all their money to help the couple, but later, feeling hungry, they steal the purses of two monks. They are caught and arrested, but with Collin's help, Villon escapes. Collin is hanged and Villon is saying farewell to his friend at the gibbet when the Chevalier de Soissons arrives and mocks the dangling corpse. Villon attacks and kills the knight and dons his suit of armor. Philippa de Annonay is held prisoner at an inn by her wicked guardian the Chevalier Bertrand de la Payne. Villon arrives at the inn and, hearing Phillippa call for help, tries to rescue her. De Payne is killed in the ensuing battle with Villon. Phillippa is returned to her castle and Villon continues on to Paris. King Louis XI wishes to test Villon's loyalty so he has the poet arrested then, disguised as a convict, offers to help Villon escape if he will help him to overthrow the king. Villon denounces the man, affirming his support of Louis. The King then reveals himself and Villon is knighted for his loyalty. ... This early Universal "epic" was considered a lost film until the summer of 1983 when a nitrate print in excellent condition was discovered in Georgia. A couple were rebuilding the steps of their front porch when they uncovered three reels of film, still in their metal cans. The last reel was tinted orange, a common practice in films of that era. Chaney appears only briefly in the second reel and is promptly murdered. He reappeared as a different character in the second installment of the serial, The Higher Law which, unfortunately, is not known to survive in any archive» (Jon C. Mirsalis).

Plot Summary, Synopsis, Review: IMDb - allmovie.com - citadelle.org - en.wikipedia.org - silentera.com - mcomet.com - lonchaney.org: «Louis XI, King of France, makes peace gestures to Edward IV, King of England, but the offer is refused due to the treacherous advice of Sir Stephen Fitz Allen. Louis asks Francois Villon's advice, and the poet suggests a scheme to remove Sir Stephen. Villon travels to England where he visits Sir Haco Hubba and his daughter, the Lady Eleyne. He convinces Sir Haco that Sir Stephen must be removed to insure peace. Lady Eleyne is sent to court where Sir Stephen falls in love with her. She baits him to come to their castle, where he is found prowling one night and executed. Villon returns to France and informs Louis of his successful mission. "The director, Charles Giblyn, has proven himself worthy of great praise. The old costumes and castles, the joviality of the tap-room, the dignified and stately action of the court followers, all lend a decidedly mediaeval atmosphere to the picture...but the picture does not rely solely on its meritorious costumes and atmosphere for success. There is sufficient scheming, brawls, duel scenes and the like to appease the appetites of the keen lovers of sensationalism, and those who would not be content with the great character study that the picture offers" Motion Picture News» (Jon C. Mirsalis).
