Prima di morire, la Strega Regina però maledice Kaulder: dato che questi vorrebbe la morte - essendogli state uccise le amate moglie e figlia - lei gli trasferisce la sua immortalità. Ai giorni nostri, Kaulder prosegue la sua lotta contro le streghe. Affiancato da un ordine sacerdotale - denominato dell'Ascia e della Croce - Kaulder sovrintende alla fragile tregua che streghe e stregoni hanno raggiunto con gli uomini (che peraltro ne ignorano l'esistenza, salvo gli appartenenti all'Ordine). Chi è dotato di poteri magici può usarli, ma non contro gli esseri umani. Naturalmente, i reprobi non mancano e quindi Kaulder, assistito dall'ormai anziano padre Dolan XXXVI (i Dolan si succedono, sacerdoti che assumono questo nome e giurano fedeltà a Kaulder), mantiene una funzione fondamentale. Ma Dolan XXXVI muore proprio il giorno in cui ha abbandonato il servizio lasciando il posto al neonominato Dolan XXXVII, giovane e volenteroso. Kaulder non si fida e scopre che non solo il sacerdote è stato vittima di una magia, ma che è ancora vivo, in una sorta di catalessi: se il colpevole verrà eliminato entro due giorni, il vecchio Dolan tornerà a vivere. Kaulder si mette quindi in azione accompagnato dal nuovo Dolan e dalla bella Chloe, una strega di buona indole, desiderosa di veder cessare i pregiudizi contro la sua razza. Ben presto, Kaulder capisce che il pericolo è grave: qualcuno manovra per riportare in vita proprio la Strega Regina. Dopo l'apprezzabile remake di La città verrà distrutta all'alba, Breck Eisner resta in qualche modo nell'horror, ma cambia totalmente registro, abbandonando le frontiere del terrore realistico per confrontarsi con un horror-action ai confini del fantasy. La cruenta lotta tra il Bene e il Male, svolta sostanzialmente all'insaputa degli esseri umani inconsapevoli dei pericoli che li minacciano, è un tema ricorrente nella letteratura e nel cinema fantastico. Naturalmente, trattandosi di un action-fantasy-horror l'enfasi vera è sullo scontro in sé, al di là delle motivazioni morali sottese, che restano sullo sfondo, inesplorate. La descrizione della città popolata da streghe, stregoni e umani che convivono senza che questi ultimi se ne rendano conto è sbrigativa, ma ha i suoi momenti divertenti e bizzarri ...» (Rudy Salvagnini).
