Il re, nonostante la sua scetticità, gli dà il permesso. Sbarcato con i suoi soldati sulla costa del Perù, Pizarro viene avvicinato da due dignitari del re Atahualpa, imperatore degli Incas, i quali lo invitano a recarsi nella loro città santa. Il rifiuto di Atahualpa di accettare gli inviti del domenicano Valverde a convertirsi, viene preso come un atto di ribellione ed i soldati iniziano a fare strage tra gli inermi Incas. Pizzarro, preso l'ospite prigioniero, gli impone di riempire d'oro una stanza dietro la promessa della libertà. Ottenuto ciò che volevano, gli spagnoli impongono a Pizzarro di uccidere Atahualpa, ma l'uomo rifiuta di venir meno alla parola data. Sarà lo stesso Atahualpa ad accettare la morte, fiducioso nella propria resurrezione. Ma la morte del re segna invece la fine dell'impero degli Incas».

It has many plusses, notably a standout duo of performances by Robert Shaw and Christopher Plummer and some very sound supporting and an intelligent top-drawer script by Philip Yordan. Story concerns General Francisco Pizarro, Spanish soldier of fortune who, for the third time penetrates Peru, the Land of the Sun, in search of the Kingdom of Gold. He leads a small, ill-equipped band with which to tackle the forces of the Inca. Shaw powerfully portrays the conquistador and his varying and complicated moods of violence, sadness, despair, anger and puzzlement. Plummer is particularly outstanding in the tricky role of King Atahuallpa, though not always entirely audible due to the curious accent he affects».
