Costner), che combatte nella terza crociata (1189-92) a fianco di Riccardo I (Cuor di Leone), evade da un carcere saraceno e sbarca in Inghilterra con un compagno di avventure, il moro Azim. Poiché il paese è in balia dei soprusi del perfido sceriffo di Nottingham (A. Rickman), organizza la guerriglia nella foresta di Sherwood col nome di Robin Hood. Lady Marian lo aspetta. Cupo, quasi tetro, un po' faticoso nella prima parte, il motore dell'azione si scalda poi nelle cadenze ilari e incalzanti di un film di cappa e spada, condite col sale dell'ironia spinta al grottesco, che il tono semiepico dell'ingresso finale di re Riccardo (S. Connery) non contraddice. Paradossalmente il punto debole del film è Costner, attore abituato a reagire più che ad agire. Manca delle qualità che furono di Fairbanks e Flynn: passione, divertimento».
