Inizialmente serializzato in Giappone da gennaio 2005 nella rivista LaLa e successivamente pubblicato in tankōbon, è stato reso disponibile anche in Italia da novembre 2006 da Planet Manga. L'adattamento anime dell'opera, annunciato dal magazine LaLa, è stato trasmesso sulla TV Tokyo dal 7 aprile 2008. Il 29 luglio 2009 è stato pubblicato in Italia da Kaze il primo DVD della serie anime doppiato in italiano. Vampire Knight è ambientato principalmente nella Cross Academy, una prestigiosa scuola privata con una quanto meno insolita struttura delle classi. Gli studenti sono infatti divisi fra Day Class, composta da normali studenti che svolgono le loro lezioni di giorno, e Night Class, un'élite di geni bellissimi che in realtà sono vampiri. Solo tre persone della Day Class sono a conoscenza di questa seconda faccia della Night Class: il preside e i due "Guardian", Yuuki Cross, la protagonista, e Zero Kiryu. I compiti dei guardian sono: assicurare una convivenza pacifica fra le due classi e non far scoprire il segreto della Night Class. Yuuki ben presto, attanagliata dai dubbi sul suo passato e da visioni sanguinose scopre che Kaname Kuran, il capo della Night Class, le nasconde un segreto. ...».
